I heard thus. Once the Blessed One, while wandering in the Kosala country with a
large community of bhikkhus, entered a town of the Kalama people called
Kesaputta.

... They went to see the Blessed One ... said to him: "There are some monks and
Brahmans, venerable sir, who visited Kesaputta. They expound and explain only
their own doctrines; the doctrines or others they despise, revile, and pull to
pieces. Some of other monks and Brahmans too, venerable sir, come to Kesaputta.
They also expound and explain only their own doctrines; the doctrines of others
they despise, revile, and pull to pieces. Venerable Sir, there is doubt, there
is uncertainly in us concerning them. Which of these reverend monks and Brahmans
spoke the truth and which falsehood?"

"It is proper for you, Kalamas, to doubt, to be uncertain; uncertainty has
arisen in you about what is doubtful. Come, Kalamas.

不可听信因为你曾听过很长的一段时间;

Do not go upon what has been acquired by repeated hearing;

不要盲从传统仅因为它很多代以来人们这么做;

nor upon tradition;

不要妄听谣言;

nor upon rumor;

不要肯定它因为它符合你的教义;

nor upon what is in a scripture;

不可单靠论理或推测;

nor upon surmise;

不要妄下定论,依赖着你所看所听;

nor upon an axiom;

不可单看事物的外相;

nor upon specious reasoning;

不可执持你喜爱的任何见解和意见;

nor upon a bias toward a notion that has been pondered over;

不可因某事物似有可能而信以为真;

nor upon another's seeming ability;

不可因为你出於你对你导师的崇敬和推荐而接受任何想法;

nor upon the consideration, 'The monk is our teacher.'

Kalamas, when you yourselves know: 'These thing are bad; these things are
blamable; these things are censured by the wise; undertaken and observed, these
things lead to harm and ill,' abandon them. ... Kalamas, when you yourselves
konw: 'These things are good; these things are not blamable; these things are
praised by the wise; undertaken and observed, these things lead to benefit and
happiness,' enter on and abide in them."

... "Venerable sir, may the Blessed One regard us as lay followers who have gone
for refuge for life, from doday."
